Relenza

Treatment:

  • Two oral inhalations (2 x 5 mg) twice daily for 5 days
  • Treatment should  commence within 2 days of symptom onset.
  • No dose modification is required in children.

Prophylaxis of influenza:

  • Two inhalations (2 x 5 mg) once daily for 10 days
  • This may be increased up to 28 days if the period of exposure risk extends beyond ten days.

Patients scheduled to take inhaled drugs, e.g. fast acting bronchodilators, at the same time as Relenza, should be advised to administer that drug prior to administration of Relenza.

Tamiflu

  • Treatment should  commence within 2 days of symptom onset
  • Adults and adolescents.
    • Oral dose in adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older is 75 mg twice daily for 5 days. 
  • Paediatric patients.
    • Oral dose of Tamiflu suspension for paediatric patients 1 year and older or adult patients who cannot swallow a capsule is as follows:
    • Paediatric dose: ( BD dosage x 5 days )
      • < 15 kg: 30 mg
      • > 15 kg - 23 mg: 45 mg
      • >23 kg - 40 kg: 60mg
      • >40 kg: 75 mg
  • Prophylaxis of influenza.
    • Oral dose of Tamiflu for prevention of influenza following close contact with an infected individual is 75 mg once daily for at least 7 days. Therapy should begin within 2 days of exposure.
    • Oral dose for prevention during a community outbreak of influenza is 75 mg once daily. Safety and efficacy have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The duration of protection lasts for as long as dosing is continued.
    • Tamiflu may be taken with or without food. However, taking with food may enhance tolerability in some patients.
