Influenza Vaccination

Pregnant Or Breast Feeding:

  • Influenza vaccine is safe for pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy and for breastfeeding mothers

Unless contraindicated*,seasonal 2010 vaccine is recommended for others not listed here, but not available free under the National Immunisation Program.

*The following should NOT get their flu shot:

  • Infants under 6 months of age.
  • Anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to eggs (hives, swelling of the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing and/or shock).
  • Anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose of influenza vaccine.

Influenza vaccination

  • Influenza vaccine does not offer post exposure protection
  • Influenza vaccine is not recommended by the NHMRC as a universal vaccination program for children
  • But it can be given to any person >6 months of age who wishes to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza.

Free vaccine is available under the National Immunisation Program for:

  • All people aged 65 years and older
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and older
  • Individuals with chronic medical conditions predisposong to severe influenzae.
  • Pregnant women.

Paediatric Vaccination

  • Two doses of vaccine at least one month apart are required for children aged < 10 years receiving 2010 combined seasonal influenza vaccine for the first time
  • Only one dose of 2010 combined seasonal influenza needed, if the child aged < 10 years, has previously had 2 doses of seasonal flu vaccine in the same year 28 days apart. ( But for an immunocomp-romised child, an additional Panvax (H1N1) by itself may be required.)
  • A child aged 10 years or over may have 2010 combined season vaccine any time after having had Panvax (H1N1) vaccine.
