Flash-Med Trivia

Consider this: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

 Tennis Elbow

This exercise should only be performed twice a day; initially for 10 seconds in each direction After each week increase the duration by 5 seconds in each twisting direction until 60 seconds is reached (week 11). This level is maintained indefinitely. Apply ice after completion, especially last thing at night.
Note: Despite severe initial pain, the patient must persist, using as much force as possible.

Q: What exercise can I do for Tennis Elbow?

A: The Wringing Exercise:

  • Roll up the hand towel.
  • With the arms extended, grasp the towel with the wrist on the affected side in slight flexion.
  • Then exert maximum wring pressure.
  • First fully flexing the wrist for 10 seconds.
  • Then fully extending the wrist for 10 seconds.
  • Alternate flexion and extension between hands.

Acknowledgements to Professor John Murtagh for this recommended exercise.

Emergency Contraception

Q: I am a young woman who just had unprotected sex.  How can I prevent a pregnancy?

A: Talk to your doctor about the morning after pill. It should be taken within 72 hours. In Australia the standard pill involves taking 2 doses of 750 micrograms of Levonorgestrel 12 hours apart exactly. This can either be 25 Tablets of a 30 microgram preparation like Microlut each time, ie 50 tablets total; or the single 750 microgram preparation Postinor, ie 2 tablets total. Now the doctor may need to talk to you not only about contraceptions. Remember sexually transmitted diseases are up and about waiting for moments like this. Prevention is miles better than cure.

Hate to say it: "There is no quick fix for all your ills."

The Latin meaning of the word Placebo is "I will please"

In the 19th century, craftsmen who made hats were known to be excitable and irrational, as well as to tremble with palsy and mix up their words. Such behavior gave rise to the familiar expression "mad as a hatter". The disorder, called hatter's shakes, was caused by chronic mercury poisoning from the solution used to treat the felt. Attacking the central nervous system, the toxin led to behavioral symptoms.

Tapeworm

Tapeworms can grow to several metres.

As part of a University of Salford experiment to develop a diagnostic test for beef tapeworm, biologist Mike Leahy volunteered to grow this gruesome parasite inside his own gut.
